Designing Your Laundry Room
The laundry room is one of the most neglected areas of a house, even though five to eight hours a week is spent doing laundry. Designing a new laundry room or organizing the one you currently have can save you a lot of time and makes it more convenient.
It doesn’t matter whether the laundry room is big or small; the space still needs to be used effectively to make doing the laundry easier. Add enough storage space for all the things needed, such as laundry detergent, softener, and dryer sheets. For ease of access, this usually should be place above the washing machine or dryer. Also, place the washer and dryer side by side. This makes is more convenient for you to easily switch the loads around.
A sink next to the washer allows you to easily presoak or rinse stains from your clothes. Having a movable hanging rack allows you to hang dry any clothes that cannot be placed in the dryer. I can also be used to hang your clothes straight from the dryer to prevent them from becoming wrinkled. Laundry sorters also saves you time as you won’t need to spend extra time in the laundry room sorting the clothes.
If you are building an addition onto your house to be used as a laundry room, it is best to put it off the kitchen. Placing the laundry room on the ground floor will take away the need to go downstairs to the basement. This also keeps mothers in hearing range of their children and keeps anyone from being isolated from the rest of the house.
Having tables in your laundry room for sorting or folding laundry can be a great asset. If you are pressed for space, having the tables be able to fold up to rest against the wall is a great idea. This way you can have a table placed to rest over the sink when it’s folded down but still able to use the sink easily when the table is folded up. You can also install a hanging rod over the dryer to hang clothes that can’t be in the dryer.
Bright colors in the room décor can make your laundry room more inviting and cheery. Having a window installed in this room lets in natural light keeping the room from being dark and dismal. Adequate lighting is also very important. This not only provides plenty of light for detailed tasks such as ironing or repairing clothes, but it can also help to dispel the darkness that usually comes in a small space.
Planning the right design of your laundry room is essential. Laundry can be a daunting task, but with the right design for ease of access can make it less of a chore. Good organization and space saving techniques can make even the smallest laundry room a less stressful atmosphere. Be creative with your design and you can be sure to have a laundry room that’s both enjoyable and convenient.
